Clean Technology

B.C. has produced the largest number of clean technology companies per share of national GDP. The province has close to 100 clean technology companies spanning nine sectors: biofuels & biochemicals; power generation; energy infrastructure; energy efficiency; process efficiency & abatement; recycling & waste; remediation; transportation; and waste & wastewater.

Seventy-three percent of clean technology companies in B.C. were established to commercialize the founder's invention. The B.C. industry is entering a period of intense product commercialization with 71 percent engaged in either building their commercialization processes, or scaling and optimizing them.

B.C. is naturally rich in renewable sources of energy. The province has nearly 3 percent of the world’s coast line and has a significant number of potential ocean energy sites. B.C. has about 20,000 MW of wave potential, and 50,000 MW of tidal potential. Also, B.C. has abundant wind energy resources, particularly in the Northeast, northern Vancouver Island, and the North Coast.

Ample investment opportunities exist for clean technology companies resulting from B.C.’s strengths in energy technologies, renewable energy resources, a progressive provincial government with policies focussed on bold GHG reduction targets, and opportunities resulting from programs such as the Innovative Clean Energy Fund to fund pilot pre-commercial energy technologies and the Venture Capital Program to accelerate access to investment capital.
